Jobs that need us on site

Some problems can't be packed into a car. Wi-Fi that drops out in parts of the house, a new modem or router that needs setting up, a printer that nobody can print to, or a new computer that needs connecting to everything else in the home all need someone in the room.

For small businesses it's the same with shared printers, network cabling, office Wi-Fi and setting up new workstations for staff. Onsite visits are within our service area of about 12km around Mount Druitt.

We also do smaller jobs that are easier in person, like getting a smart TV or games console connected, sorting out email on several devices at once, or showing you how to use a new laptop.

What we check on a Wi-Fi visit

We test speed at the modem first, to separate a problem with your internet connection from a problem with the home network. If the connection itself is poor, that's one for your provider, and we'll tell you what to report.

If the connection is fine at the modem, we look at router placement, interference from neighbouring networks, and whether the house simply needs more coverage. Mesh systems work best with their units placed carefully, or linked by cable where possible, and we test in the rooms where the dropouts happen.

If your home has thick brick internal walls, a double-storey layout or a granny flat out the back, one router at the front of the house often isn't enough. We'll explain the options and what each involves before anything is bought.

Printers and new computers

Printer jobs include installing the right drivers on each computer, connecting the printer to Wi-Fi properly, and setting up scanning to email or a shared folder.

With a new computer, we set up your accounts, email, printer and programs, move your files and browser bookmarks from the old machine, and set up a backup. We can also wipe the old computer if you're passing it on.

How onsite work is priced

Onsite visits are quoted separately from the $274 repair price, because the work varies so much from job to job. Tell us what's going on when you book and we'll quote before we come out.

If we find the fault is inside the computer, such as a failed drive or a board problem, it's usually better for us to take it back to the workshop. Repairs done there come under the normal fixed repair price.

We'll also tell you if a job can be done more simply over remote support, at $179 per hour, such as an email or software problem that doesn't need anyone at your place.

Typical jobs

A typical job: a double-storey home where the Wi-Fi drops out in the upstairs bedrooms. We test the speed at the modem to rule out the provider, then place mesh units where they do the most good and check coverage in each room where the dropouts happened.

A typical example: a small office where nobody can print after the router was replaced. We give the printer a fixed network address, install the correct drivers on each computer, set up scanning to email, and test printing and scanning from every desk before we leave.

Another typical job: setting up a new computer at home. We move documents, photos, email and browser bookmarks from the old machine, install the programs and printer, set up a backup, and wipe the old computer if it is being passed on to someone else.

Before we arrive

Have your internet provider login, Wi-Fi name and password, and the passwords for your Microsoft, Apple or Google accounts handy. For printers and new computers, the admin password for each machine saves time.
